User maintenance
IIISi, 4Si, 4SiMX
This message appears after 200,000 pages have been
run through the printer. It is a User Maintenance message indicating
that certain parts should be replaced in the printer (or maintenance
should be performed).
These parts are purchased via the Printer
Maintenance Kit (part number C2062A) and can be obtained by contacting
either an HP Authorized Dealer or the Support Materials Organization
The parts included in this kit are as follows:
Fusing Assembly
Transfer Roller and Transfer Roller Clip
Pick-Up and Separation Rollers
Duplex Pick-Up Roller (If installed)
These are User Replaceable parts. The directions for completing this
maintenance come with the Printer Maintenance Kit and can also be found
in the User's Manual (HP LaserJet IIISi printer) or Operator's Guide
(HP LaserJet 4Si printer).
This message will appear again after every 200,000 copies and user maintenance is recommended at this point.
The
message will be displayed on the control panel until it is cleared. The
message is cleared by changing Service Msg=Off in the Config menu of
the printer on the HP LaserJet IIISi printer or changing User
Maintenance=Off in the Config menu on the HP LaserJet 4Si printer.
Clearing the message will reset the internal maintenance page counter
(not the same as page count listed on self-test) to zero.

Paper tray is empty. If there is paper in the tray
and the printer still displays 11, verify the tray is all the way in.
If the message persists, consult service.
12 Printer Open
II, IID, III, IIID, IIISI, 4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, 4Si, 4Si MX
The printer's top cover is not correctly closed, or
the toner cartridge is not correctly installed. Verify the toner
cartridge is fully seated and close the printer firmly. Plugging a 220V
model printer into a 120V power source can also result in this message.
If this message persists, a repair may be required.
12 Printer Open Or No EP
IIP, IIP Plus, IIIP, 4P, 4MP
The printer is not closed properly, the toner
cartridge is missing, broken, or defective, or the cooling fan is not
working. Plugging a 220V model printer into a 120V power source can
also result in this message. Ensure the printer is firmly closed. If
the message persists, consult service.
13 Paper Jam
II, IIP, IIIP, IID, IIP+, IIID
Remove jammed paper. The top must be opened and
closed (the front on the IIP, IIP+, IIIP) to clear the message. Double
check the duplexing paper path on the IID and IIID (left side door). If
the message persists, there may be a malfunctioning paper path sensor
and service would be needed.
13.X Paper Jam
1 internal
2 input
3 duplex
4 output
IIISi, 4Si, 4Si MX
Paper is jammed somewhere along the paper path. The
value that follows the "13" in the message window will indicate in
which part of the paper path the paper is jammed. Also, the paper jam
sensor at the rear of the fusing assembly may have become stuck. Check
the optional duplexing paper path if the duplexer has been installed.
13 Paper Jam
IID, IIID
Paper jams can occur in these printers when using
the "automatic manual feed" as opposed to explicitly putting the
printer in manual feed mode. The use of "automatic manual feed" is not
a supported feature, nor is it a suggested procedure. This procedure is
known to cause problems, particularly when using the lower cassette as
the manual feed slot because it is more difficult to align the paper
properly when it is pulled in from the lower input slot. Paper is the
only print media that should be fed from the lower input slot and other
types of media may not only cause jamming, but also permanent printer
damage.
13 Paper Jam
HP LaserJet 4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, Printers
Paper is jammed in the paper path or the paper jam
sensor at the rear of the fusing assembly may be stuck, causing a false
paper jam warning. Remove jammed paper. While clearing paper jams the
top cover or rear cover must be opened and closed again before pressing
Continue or online to resume. Check that the rear cover is closed; an
open rear cover may cause a paper jam. If no paper jam is found, check
locations shown in the user's manual.
4P, 4MP
Paper is jammed in the top or rear of the printer.
Clear jam and press Continue or Online to resume printing. To prevent
further jams, verify the rear door is closed securely. A false paper
jam message will occur if the printer's back door is open. If message
persists, the printer could have a defective paper jam sensor and
service would be required.
14 No EP Cart
14 No Toner Cart
II, IID, III, IIID, IIISi, 4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus
There is no toner cartridge in the printer, or this
message indicates the possibility of a broken or damaged toner
cartridge. Turn the printer off and back on. If the message returns
replace toner cartridge. After replacing cartridge if the message still
occurs consult service.
15 Engine Test
Not all printers have this option.
Engine Test with a single sheet of vertical line printout also known as a "skewing" test.
16 Toner Low
II, IID, III, IIID, 4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus
Toner cartridge is low on toner. The message may
also indicate the EP cartridge is not making good contact with the
printer's internal circuitry. Shake and re-install the toner cartridge.
Replace the toner cartridge. If the message persists, consult service.
On
the LaserJet 4, 4M, 4Plus and 4MPlus Printers if Toner Low=On (Config
menu), this message will remain in the display until the toner
cartridge is changed. If Toner Low=Off this message will disappear by
pressing Continue.
16 Toner Low 1
16 Toner Low 2
16 Toner Low 3
IIISi, 4Si, 4Si MX
Toner Low 1 indicates the 8000 page toner cartridge
is approximately 200 pages from depletion. Toner Low 2 and Toner Low 3
are indications of further depletion with Toner Low 3 indicating a
nearly illegible page. Replace the toner cartridge.
17 Mem Config
IIIP, III, IIID, IIISi
A status message by the printer indicating it is
re-configuring internal and expanded memory for page protection. If the
you are using an optional I/O board, you may lose the optional setting
in the configuration menu. If this occurs after page protection is
turned on, power cycle the printer (off and on) and reselect the
optional I/O in the Configuration Menu. In some cases, you may have to
take the optional board out, set page protection on, then install the
optional board.
18 Skip Self-test
III, IIID, IIISi
A Status message indicating that the "minus" key was
held down while powering up the printer. If the printer is stuck in
this mode, the minus key is probably stuck. Turn the printer off,
choose the minus key, and turn the printer back on.
18 Aux I/O Init
4, 4M
The modular I/O card is initializing. This message
will automatically disappear after the card is initialized (in less
than 60 seconds, depending on the card). No action required.
18 Aux I/O Nt Rdy
4, 4M
The modular I/O (MIO) card is not ready. Refer to
the MIO card's documentation. The printer will continue to display this
message until the problem with the card is corrected or the card is
removed. Always turn off and unplug the printer when removing I/0
cards. Pressing Continue will not clear the display.
18 MIO INIT
4Plus, 4Mplus
The MIO card is initializing. This is a status
message; during initialization the MIO is not active, since the printer
supports I/O switching, the printer remains on line. No action
required, display will clear automatically (this may take up to a
minute, depending on the card).
18 MIO Not Ready
4Plus, 4Mplus
The MIO card is not ready. The serial and Bi-Tronics
parallel ports will continue to operate normally. SHIFT and Continue

The upper MIO card is initializing. During
initialization the MIO is not active, but since the printer supports
I/O switching, the printer remains on line and displays this status
message. No action required. Display clears automatically (this can
take up to a minute, depending upon the card.
19 Add Memory
IIP, IIP Plus
This message appears if the PCL 5 Cartridge is installed without adding optional memory.
20 Error
II, IIP, IIP+, IID
The printer received more data (soft fonts, macros
or graphics) than it can fit into its internal memory. Press Continue
to resume printing. Purchase additional printer memory or reduce the
amount of data. Data can be reduced by using fewer soft fonts and
macros, smaller graphics, and a lower resolution. A repair is Not
required.
The printer received more data from the computer
than can fit in its available user memory. You may have tried to
transfer too many macros or soft fonts, or graphics that were too
complex. Press SHIFT and Continue to print the transferred data (data
loss may result), then simplify the print job or install additional
memory.
21 Error
IIP, IIP+, II, IID
The printer is unable to process very complex data
fast enough for the print engine. Multiple addressing of single pixels,
too many different fonts or characters in a document or too many cursor
position addresses per document will cause this error. Press Continue
to resume printing. Repair is not required.
Workarounds:
1. Reduce the document's complexity by using fewer fonts and removing bolding, shading, or underlining.
Complex data (rules, graphics, dense text) have
caused the printer's page formatting process to "fall behind" the
printing process. For the 4 family this problem is also caused by
printing too many typefaces at 600 dpi, or by printing a PostScript job
at 600 dpi using only the printers base memory.
Workarounds:
1. Reduce the document's complexity by using fewer fonts and removing bolding, shading, or underlining.
2. Reduce the document's graphics resolution.
3. Select the printer's Page Protect option (Letter, A4, Legal). The following amounts of optional printer memory are required to use the "Page Protect" feature: HP LaserJet III Printer FamilyRequires 2 MB to use page protect at Letter, A4 or Legal sizes.HP LaserJet 4 Printer Family

22 I/O CNFIG ERROR
IIP, IIP+, II, IID, III, IIID, IIISI, IIIP
Serial buffer overflow error. The host computer did
not receive, or ignored, the printer's request to suspend the flow of
data causing the printer's buffer to overflow. Press Continue to clear
the error message. Verify that the proper printer cable is being used
and that both ends of the cable are tightly connected. If the error
appears on the printer at bootup, check to see if the printers serial
cable is plugged into the computer's parallel port. If running
parallel, the cause could be a bad cable or printer interface. If the
error appears only after data is sent, there may be incompatible
handshaking protocol; for example, XON/XOFF, or DTR. By default, the
printer lowers the DTR polarity and sends XOFF (DC3) to suspend the
flow of data. DTR is raised and XON (DC1) sent to resume the flow.
22 Error
4, 4M, 4P, 4MP
The Serial or Parallel (bi-tronics) interface is
improperly configured or there is a communication issue. Press Continue
to clear the error. Some data may be lost. If on a network contact the
network administrator. There may be a problem with the network
interface. If the error continues after troubleshooting contact your HP
dealer or Service representative.
Parallel Communication
1. Defective parallel cable or cable that is over the supported 10 foot length.
2. Verify the cable connections are secure at both ends. Disconnect and reconnect even if they look secure.3. Set High Speed to No and Advanced Functions to "OFF" in the Parallel Menu on the front panel of the printer.4.
If using Novell network v. 3.11 and a version of PServer before 1.22.
Upgrade to at least PServer v.1.22 and change the "Use Interrupts"
setting in the Print Server Information section of the Novell PConsole
utility to No.
Serial Communication:
1. Serial cable plugged into the parallel port on the PC (error 22 message will appear when the printer is turned on).
2. Defective serial cable or cable that is over the supported length.
3. Verify the cable connections are secure at both ends. Disconnect and reconnect even if they look secure.
4. Not using correct hardware handshaking (XON/XOFF or DTR).

40 Error
All
Indicates a protocol error occurred during the
transfer of data from the computer to the printer. This error can be
caused by a loose or damaged cable, loss of power to the computer while
the printer is online, or incompatible baud rate, parity, data bits, or
stop bits settings. In addition, this error can occur on the HP
LaserJet III or IIID Printer if the I/O is configured to serial and
serial is set to RS-422 before a cable is attached to the serial I/O on
the printer and/or the host system.
For modular I/O (MIO) cards, this means there was an
abnormal connection break. Press Continue to clear the error message.
Insure that the printer and computer are configured for the same baud
rate; typically 9600. Caution; do not power the computer on or off when
the printer is powered on. If this problem persists, a repair may be
required. If an optional I/O interface is installed, refer to that
product's documentation or contact the vendor.
